Public Works Maintenance Worker

REPORTS TO:  PW Superintendent DEPARTMENT:  Street/Water
GRADE LEVEL:  4 ($11.11 hourly) STATUS:  Regular / Full
SUPERVISOR:  No CLASSIFICATION:  Laborer 2

SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:

Maintains streets and other City property and right-a-ways by street repair, maintaining, repairing replacing street signage and street markings.  Cleaning and removing debris from streets and other city properties and right-a-ways.  Installs water and sewer lines; repairs water main and meter box leaks.  Performs maintenance on wells and lift stations

  • Operates concrete saw, portable concrete mixer, air compressor, pneumatic drill and tamper, hand tools and gas power trimmer/edger, chain saw, track loader, mowers, trucks and street sweeper, backhoe, pump truck, dump truck.
  • Compacts base course materials, saws cut area, installs concrete forms, remove forms, mixes concrete for repair.  Patches repair holes and pot-holes with asphalt.  Seal cracks as needed.
  • Inspects drainage facilities for debris, removes debris from drainage system, installs and repairs street signs.
  • Mows, weed-eat and use chain saw as required to clear right-a-ways and other city properties. Removes branches that obstruct line of sight for street signs as required.
  • Maintains, fuel and clean vehicles, equipment and tools to assure proper working condition
  • Maintains barricades (including lights) traffic cones and other safety equipment.
  • Follows safety procedures while working
  • Keeps work shed and office clean and orderly
  • Keeps streets and drainage areas clear of debris during emergency situations after hours when required.
  • Installs water and sewer lines; repairs water main and meter box leaks
  • Performs maintenance on wells and lift stations
  • Performs preventative maintenance on tools and equipment
  • Performs minor carpentry, painting, welding and plumbing.  Cleans and stocks truck.  Loads and unloads various materials; performs yard clean up
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends and some holidays and overtime as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of basic construction methods and a wide variety of equipment used in construction and/or repair of streets, street signs, and drainage systems; methods and procedures in the use of concrete and asphalt and basic construction safety standards. 

Ability to read and follow written directions, identify safety hazards, physically handle large objects with good hand and foot and eye coordination, ability to safely push, shove, lift, pull, physically handle and throw heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs) and work in an outdoor environment subject to changing weather conditions.  Good communication skills with ability to maintain effective working relationships. 

Six months related experience in the construction trades.  A valid Texas Class C driver’s license required plus a good driving record with the ability to obtain a commercial drivers license within 6 months of employment.  Must be 18 years of age.
